As we celebrate this new year filled with new opportunities for growth and development, we are gifted with the perfect opportunity to reassess our approaches to our goals in life and work. Being an evidence based optimist, I often draw on the works of individuals I admire and try to follow their lead. I wanted to draw your attention to Shane J. Lopez, Ph.D.. Dr. Lopez is a Senior Scientist in Residence at The Gallup Organization and has authored books including Positive Psychology: The Scientific and Practical Explorations of Human Strengths. Dr. Lopez identifies hope as “part of authentic leadership”. Living in this tumultuous economic climate, now, more than ever, it is critical that we learn to become authentic leaders of our own lives. In creating our “authentic selves”, we are challenged to identify our natural strengths, develop our talents and share them with the world. Adopting an attitude of hopefulness helps us stay energized to reach goals, find solutions to challenges that present and make the entire experience of living life more joyful. Before the year gets busy and inspiration starts to get away from you, make the opportunity to identify what is important in developing the authentic leadership of YOU. Identify what it is that you most want to experience this year. Set big goals. Put expected completion dates on the calendar and live your life very “future oriented” focused on making said goals come true. You are in charge of you. You determine how great your life will be. You have the amazing opportunity to create the life of your dreams. Be confident in embracing the opportunities that present to you. Live boldly and seize the day – only you know what is most important to you. Recognize that which is most important to you, and work to bring it into your life. With only one life to live, appreciate every day and make sure you’re living each day to the fullest!
